Exhibition- Righteous Among the Nations- Chiune (Sempo) Sugihara

Righteous Among the Nations Chiume [Sempo] Sugihara was the Japanese Consul in Lithuania in 1939. That same year, a massive number of Jewish refugees arrived at the consulate in Lithuania in an effort to escape Nazi prosecution. Sugihara sent a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo to approve the refugees’ visas, but they denied his request. Sugihara decided to issue those visas without the ministry’s approval, knowing that these visas were their only hope. Sugihara didn’t quit issuing the visas until he was deported from Lithuania. In 1984 the Yad Vasem Institute acknowledged Sugihara as Righteous Among the Nations.
