Title

The castle that saved lives : the extraordinary story of the rescue and shelter of two hundred Kindertransport children in a 19th century castle in North Wales

Description

"In North Wales, in an enchanted, dilapidated castle, two hundred Jewish children found refuge from Nazi persecution. The children, rescued by the formidable Kindertransport Operation, joined the castle's hachshara center, established by the Youth Aliyah and Bachad movements and run by a devoted team of counsellors headed by Erwin Eliezer Seligmann. they lived there from August 1939 to May 1941. Yearbook: Gwrych Castle, 1939/1940, written contemporaneously by the children and their young counsellors, captures their daily struggles and hopes, the darkness and light of their lives, under the extraordinary circumstances in which they found themselves. Decades later, Hanna, Erwin Seligmann's daughter, recovered the yearbook, elucidated, and elaborated its contents based on her personal knowledge and understanding, and breathed new life into a little-known chapter of history."
